Growing Momentum for ZigBee Smart Energy 1.x
Mississauga, ON – April 8, 2011 - Certicom Corp., an innovator in smart energy security technologies, today announced that it has issued over sixteen million ZigBee Smart Energy device certificates since the ZigBee Smart Energy Profile’s creation in May 2008. Fifty companies have been issued device certificates for their certified interoperable ZigBee Alliance Smart Energy Profile 1.x products. In early 2008 collaboration between ZigBee technology companies and utility industry partners led to the creation of the ZigBee Smart Energy Profile. The goal was to enable a green energy revolution with automated energy monitoring and control of smart electric meters and in-home devices. The result has been explosive growth for wireless sensor networks. Certicom’s Certification Authority for ZigBee Smart Energy devices has issued device certificates to fifty ZigBee Smart Energy Certified device manufacturers. Over one million ZigBee Smart Energy certificates were shipped in the first twelve months of operation, and four million in the second. The third year of production has doubled that growth. Ten million certificates have been issued in less than 12 months, with over fifteen million certificates issued in total. To support ZigBee Smart Energy adoption Certicom Security Builder MCE libraries have been ported to platforms from Ember Corporation, Texas Instruments, NEC Electronics, Renesas Technology, Freescale Semiconductor, Microchip Technology, Jennic and Atmel Corporation. Fifteen variants of the Security Builder MCE ZigBee Smart Energy library are currently available under Certicom’s free licensing program and additional ones are being considered. In the case of Ember, the libraries are now available for distribution as part of Ember’s ZigBee Smart Energy compliant ZigBee solutions. Over 150 companies using our free libraries and test certificates to develop Certicom Secure™ ZigBee Smart Energy 1.x products, putting a broad spectrum of new energy management devices on the horizon.
“An application security framework supporting role and policy-based access control will enable an ecosystem of trusted smart devices, a vision we share with our ZigBee Alliance partners” said Jim Alfred, director of product management at Certicom. “Certicom is embracing ZigBee, offering innovations in ECC as foundation technology for ZigBee Smart Energy as part of an ongoing mission to be a leading authority in cryptology.”
